The world’s most-downloaded education app, now teaching a billion people
HQ: Pittsburgh, PA, United States | Founded: 2011 | Employees: ~900 (official datasets ~2026) | Stage: Public — NASDAQ: DUOL, IPO July 2021 | Website: https://www.duolingo.com
Duolingo, Inc. is a Pittsburgh-based consumer learning company whose flagship app teaches languages (and increasingly math, music and chess) through gamified mobile lessons. The core app is free; subscriptions (Super Duolingo / Max), advertising, in-app purchases and the Duolingo English Test monetize portions of the user base.
Luis von Ahn — a MacArthur 'genius' grant recipient famous for inventing reCAPTCHA and contributing to CAPTCHA — co-founded Duolingo with Severin Hacker at Carnegie Mellon. The original thesis: people will learn for free if the product is good enough, and that free learning can simultaneously solve real-world translation quality (an early secondary ambition that later became less central than the consumer app business). Duolingo grew into the most-downloaded education app worldwide, went public in 2021, and has since become a case study in consumer product excellence: streak psychology, social leagues, notifications and brand marketing (including the famous owl) that punch far above a sub-1,000-person headcount.
In 2025–2026 Duolingo is executing a deliberate second act: use generative AI both as a teaching feature (video calls, personalized practice) and as a content factory (massively faster course creation), while expanding beyond languages into adjacent subjects and managing the economic trade-off between AI cost, gross margin and user growth. Leadership has been explicit that the mission — best education in the world, universally available, toward a billion learners — justifies near-term margin moderation if it grows the top of funnel.
Duolingo’s real product is not lessons — it is retention. Streaks, leagues, hearts, notifications and the owl mascot are one of the best consumer-growth machines ever built in education. That machine let Duolingo give the core product away free, monetize a minority of users with Max/Plus subscriptions, and turn advertising and the Duolingo English Test into secondary engines. Crossing 50M DAU and $1B bookings in 2025 proved the free-first model still works at enormous scale.
The 2026 strategy is a conscious trade: sacrifice some near-term monetization rate to grow DAUs toward a medium-term goal of 100 million. Q2 2026 accelerated DAU growth to 23% YoY (58.7M) with paid subs up 17% to 12.7M and revenue +18% to $298.5M. Management is also teaching better with AI — publishing 20,500 course units in Q1 2026 alone, more than 10x the rate of two years earlier, and launching video-call practice and other generative features while carefully managing the gross-margin impact of inference costs (guided down to ~69% by Q4 2026 as AI features expand).
The bear case is that AI makes content cheap for everyone, eroding Duolingo’s moat, and that freemium education apps face engagement cliffs outside language learning. The bull case is that Duolingo already won the distribution war, is the most trusted consumer education brand on earth, and is using AI as a content factory that competitors cannot match because they lack the engagement graph and the pedagogy. Chess, math and music expand the TAM beyond languages; the $400M buyback authorization shows management thinks the stock can compound while they invest.
