Founded in 2009 in Ukraine by Max Lytvyn, Alex Shevchenko, and Dmytro Lider, Grammarly grew from a grammar-checking tool into one of the world's most recognizable AI writing assistants, used by more than 40 million people daily across free and paid tiers. In late 2024/early 2025 the company acquired Coda and installed Coda founder Shishir Mehrotra as CEO; it then acquired Superhuman Mail (July 2025) and, in October 2025, rebranded the entire company to Superhuman, unifying Grammarly, Docs (formerly Coda), Mail, and a new proactive agent assistant called Superhuman Go under one brand. Subsequent acquisitions of Rows (Feb 2026), GPTZero (closed Sept 2026, >$1B valuation), and Fathom AI Notetaker (Sept 2026) expanded the suite into spreadsheets, AI detection/authenticity, and meeting intelligence. The company reports more than $700M in annual revenue and 50,000+ organizational customers including Atlassian, Zoom, Databricks, BlackRock, and Upwork, and remains private with a last disclosed equity valuation of $13B (2021) and non-dilutive growth financing from General Catalyst.
Grammarly is one of the most widely used AI consumer/Prosumer products ever built — 40M+ daily users and 50,000+ organizations generating an estimated $700M+ in annual revenue — but it has not raised a priced equity round since its $13B Series C in 2021. Under CEO Shishir Mehrotra (ex-YouTube, founder of Coda), the company acquired Coda (~$1B), Superhuman Mail, Rows, GPTZero (>$1B), and Fathom, then rebranded the whole company to Superhuman in October 2025 to pivot from a single writing tool to an agent-powered work suite. A $1B non-dilutive financing from General Catalyst's Customer Value Fund funded the M&A spree without equity dilution. The strategic bet is real, but the flat-to-marked-down valuation (secondary PPS $16.36 as of Oct 2026, well below the 2021 peak) shows investors are skeptical the suite transition can outrun commoditization by Microsoft 365 Copilot and ChatGPT.
