Stability AI was founded in 2019 by Emad Mostaque (with co-founder Cyrus Hodes) in London with the mission to make generative AI open and accessible. The company rose to global prominence in Aug 2022 by commercializing and open-sourcing Stable Diffusion — the latent diffusion text-to-image model originally developed at LMU Munich by Robin Rombach, Patrick Esser (later Runway) and the CompVis group. By releasing weights permissively on Hugging Face and GitHub, Stability amassed over 330 million downloads and became Hugging Face's most-downloaded model family in late 2023, powering an estimated 80% of AI-generated imagery online.
