Udio operates as Uncharted Labs, founded Dec 2023 in NYC by former Google DeepMind researchers David Ding (CEO), Conor Durkan, Charlie Nash, Yaroslav Ganin (multiple sources credit Andrew Sanchez as founding team) after work on generative music and audio at DeepMind. The company exited limited beta in April 2024 with a web app that generates full songs (vocals, harmony, structure) from text prompts. Its seed round led by Andreessen Horowitz (a16z) in Apr 2024 raised $10M with Instagram co-founder Mike Krieger, former DeepMind colleagues, and musicians will.i.am, Common, musician-producer Tay Keith and UnitedMasters' Steve Stoute participating. ChartLex's 2026 tracker reports a ~$60M follow-on at $200M+ valuation. In June 2024 the RIAA on behalf of Universal, Warner and Sony sued Udio (and rival Suno) alleging mass infringement for training on copyrighted recordings without license — now the central legal overhang for AI music.
Udio is the music generation rival to Suno, spun out of Google DeepMind in Dec 2023 by David Ding's team and backed by a16z; it wowed with remarkably musical text-to-song.
