Astral was founded in April 2023 by Charlie Marsh, a self-taught Rust developer and data scientist (ex-Crunchbase) who had grown frustrated with the performance of Python's standard tooling. His first act was Ruff — a Python linter and formatter written in Rust, 10-100x faster than the incumbent (Flake8, Black, and friends) — released in late 2022 as an open-source project.
