Aurora Innovation was founded in 2017 in Pittsburgh, PA by three autonomous vehicle luminaries: Chris Urmson (former CTO of Waymo / lead of Google Self-Driving Car), Sterling Anderson (former Director of Tesla Autopilot), and Drew Bagnell (former head of autonomy at Uber ATG and Carnegie Mellon professor). The company develops the Aurora Driver, an SAE Level 4 autonomous driving platform designed to operate both Class 8 trucks and passenger vehicles. Unlike robotaxi-first competitors, Aurora bet early on autonomous trucking — a trillion-dollar freight market plagued by driver shortages, safety issues, and low margins — partnering with OEMs Volvo Autonomous Solutions and Paccar (Peterbilt/Kenworth) for redundant, automotive-grade chassis and German supplier Continental for scalable hardware manufacturing from 2027.
Aurora went public on November 4, 2021 via merger with Reinvent Technology Partners Y (REIN), a SPAC sponsored by Reid Hoffman and Mark Pincus, raising ~$2B at an $11-13B valuation and listing on Nasdaq as AUR. Prior to the SPAC, investors included Sequoia Capital, Greylock Partners, Index Ventures, T. Rowe Price, Baillie Gifford, Amazon, and Uber (which contributed its self-driving unit ATG in Dec 2020 for a 26% stake). The company further raised $820M in July 2023 ($600M private placement + $220M public offering) to fund commercialization. After declaring the Aurora Driver "feature complete" in April 2023, Aurora closed its safety case and launched America's first commercial driverless trucking service on April 27, 2025, hauling freight for Uber Freight, FedEx, Werner, Schneider and Hirschbach between Dallas and Houston on I-45, with plans to expand to El Paso and Phoenix and scale to 200+ observer-free trucks across the Sun Belt by end of 2026 on a driver-as-a-service model at ~$0.85/mile.
