Aurora Innovation was founded in 2017 in Pittsburgh, PA by three autonomous vehicle luminaries: Chris Urmson (former CTO of Waymo / lead of Google Self-Driving Car), Sterling Anderson (former Director of Tesla Autopilot), and Drew Bagnell (former head of autonomy at Uber ATG and Carnegie Mellon professor). The company develops the Aurora Driver, an SAE Level 4 autonomous driving platform designed to operate both Class 8 trucks and passenger vehicles. Unlike robotaxi-first competitors, Aurora bet early on autonomous trucking — a trillion-dollar freight market plagued by driver shortages, safety issues, and low margins — partnering with OEMs Volvo Autonomous Solutions and Paccar (Peterbilt/Kenworth) for redundant, automotive-grade chassis and German supplier Continental for scalable hardware
