The optical I/O company breaking the AI data-center bottleneck

Ayar Labs was founded in 2015 as a spin-out from MIT's Research Laboratory of Electronics, where founders Chen Sun, Alex Wright, Mark Wade, and Professor Vladimir Stojanović pioneered 'optical I/O' — using light, not electrons, to move data in and out of computer chips. The core insight: as AI models exploded in size, electrical interconnects became the wall that training and inference runs into — power-hungry, bandwidth-limited, and impossible to scale past a few inches. Ayar's photonic I/O technology puts optical transceivers directly on-chip (co-packaged optics), enabling vastly higher bandwidth with a fraction of the power and distance constraints of copper.\n\nThe company's technology sits at the center of the AI infrastructure buildout: its chips are designed to plug into AI accelera
