StackBlitz was founded in 2017 by Eric Simons, who had spent years building WebContainers: a WebAssembly-based runtime that runs the Node.js toolchain — npm, webpack, Vite — entirely inside the browser, with no servers involved. For seven years it powered a developer IDE used by millions and licensed to companies like Google and Apple, but the business stayed modest. As Simons tells it, that was seven years of 'failure' that became the foundation for everything after.
In October 2024, StackBlitz bolted an AI agent onto WebContainers and launched Bolt.new: type a prompt, watch a full-stack web app get generated, run, and edited live in your browser, then deploy it — no local setup, no environment hell. Because everything executes client-side, Bolt could scale instantly without provisioning
