About

Calendly is a scheduling automation platform founded in 2013 in Atlanta by Tope Awotona, a former IBM/Dell/Perceptive software salesperson frustrated by the back-and-forth of booking sales calls. He bootstrapped with ~$200K of savings and debt, hired Kyiv-based Railsware for initial development, and launched freemium before adding paid tiers in 2014. The company reached profitability in 2016 on ~$550K of outside capital, then raised $350M in January 2021 from OpenView and ICONIQ at a $3B+ valuation — a secondary-heavy round that provided liquidity rather than operating capital. Calendly closed its Atlanta HQ in July 2021 and went fully remote. Users share booking links that sync with Google/Outlook calendars; freemium virality drives bottom-up adoption across sales, recruiting, and customer success teams. Acquisitions include MeetingNotes/Hugo (Aug 2022) and Prelude (Sep 2022) for recruiting scheduling. On August 19, 2026, Calendly launched Callie (AI assistant, beta) and Calendly Notetaker, entering the crowded AI note-taker market and introducing Standard Plus and Teams Plus plans that bundle AI with scheduling. The company remains private, founder-controlled, and has not announced IPO plans.

The Take

Calendly is the capital-efficiency poster child of the PLG era — and a study in delayed repricing. Founder Tope Awotona bootstrapped it from ~$200K of personal savings to profitability in 2016, raised just $550K before taking a single $350M Series B in January 2021 at a $3B+ valuation (OpenView + ICONIQ), and has not raised a priced primary round since. Third-party estimates (Sacra) put ARR at $349M by end-2024 (+40% y/y from $270M in 2023), implying the 2021 mark was not absurd — but no 2025-26 repricing has been disclosed. An April 2026 secondary transaction closed without public valuation. The Aug 19, 2026 launch of Callie (AI scheduling assistant) and Calendly Notetaker — bundled into new Standard Plus ($18) and Teams Plus ($24) plans — is the biggest product bet since founding, aiming to own the full meeting lifecycle before/during/after. Risks: Google/Microsoft free scheduling bundles, Cal.com open-source pressure, and a lean ~868-person org after 130+ layoffs (2023-24). Awotona retains majority control — rare at this scale.
