Cluely began as Interview Coder, an 'undetectable' AI assistant for software-engineering interviews built by Chungin "Roy" Lee and Neel Shanmugam at Columbia University. In April 2025, Lee was suspended after publicly demonstrating the tool, and the pair dropped out to commercialize it — raising a $5.3M seed from Abstract Ventures and Susa Ventures within days of the suspension going viral. The company relaunched as Cluely with the tagline 'cheat on everything' and a produced launch video, reportedly drawing ~70,000 signups in the first week.
