n8n (pronounced 'nodemation') is a workflow automation platform: you wire together triggers, actions and logic as a graph of nodes, connecting 400-plus services — CRMs, databases, messaging tools, AI models — into automations that would otherwise need custom glue code. Every node can drop into JavaScript or Python, and unlike most competitors, n8n can be self-hosted, which is why security-sensitive enterprises adopted it early.
Founder Jan Oberhauser started the project in Berlin in 2019 under a fair-code licence (source-available, with commercial terms for hosted use) — a deliberate middle ground between open source and proprietary. The company monetizes through n8n Cloud and enterprise features (governance, SSO, scale) while the community edition spreads bottom-up through engineering teams.
AI made n8n strategically important rather than merely popular. Agents need to call tools, move data between systems and hand work to humans — n8n does exactly that, with the error handling and observability production systems require. The company repositioned around AI orchestration in 2025, and enterprise adoption followed: the October 2025 Series C valued it at $2.5B, and SAP's May 2026 strategic investment doubled that to $5.2B with a deal to embed n8n across SAP's product line.
n8n won the developers that Zapier never could. The pitch is simple: automation you can see, extend and — if you want — run on your own servers. Workflows are built as node graphs, every node's code is editable, and the self-hosted option means sensitive data never leaves your infrastructure. That combination made n8n the default automation tool for engineering and IT teams, and when AI agents needed reliable plumbing, n8n was already in place.
The 2025–2026 repositioning as an 'AI orchestration' platform turned that install base into a growth story. Teams use n8n to wire agents to databases, internal APIs and each other — with human-in-the-loop steps and error handling that raw agent frameworks lack. A $180M Series C in October 2025 at $2.5B (Accel-led, with NVIDIA among the backers) took total funding to $240M.
Then came the European stamp of approval: in May 2026 SAP took a strategic stake at a $5.2 billion valuation and signed a multi-year deal to embed n8n into SAP's stack — a distribution deal of a different order, putting the automation layer in front of hundreds of thousands of enterprise customers.
The risks are competitive rather than existential: Microsoft bundles Power Automate into agreements nobody has to approve, and Zapier, Make and open-source rivals (Activepieces, Windmill, Temporal-style tools) circle the same buyers. n8n's moat is its technical depth — code-level control, self-hosting, and 400+ integrations — which is exactly what enterprise engineering teams prefer and exactly what non-technical buyers find harder to adopt.
